What to Expect

What to Expect

Announcements begin at 9:55 AM; the service begins at 10:00 AM. Our four superb choirs and solo musicians will often lend their talents to the services. Afterward, join us for coffee and conversation in our newly finished Fellowship Hall below the Sanctuary. Religious education for children and youth is available in nearby classrooms while adults attend the service. There is universal access to the Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, and lower-level bathroom.

Services

Every Sunday, 10:00 - 11:00a.m. (Announcements start at 9:55.)

Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd is in the pulpit most Sundays. Other services are arranged by the Worship Committee. The Adult Choir generally sings on the second and third Sundays of the month.

The BRUU music ministry presents two services each year that are devoted to music as worship. In June the adult choir presents a Spring music service. In December there is a holiday music service with the adult, youth, and children's choirs.

For some weeks in the summer Rev. Nancy has vacation and the choirs are on break. The summer services are lay-led and are quite varied.

Parking

On-street parking is scarce directly in front of the church, but there is ample parking within a couple blocks. Across the street are two business parking lots available on Sundays. There are several municipal parking lots within Old Town, including the new five-story parking garage next to the train station, between Battle and Main Streets (two blocks from BRUU). The entrance to the parking garage is on Prince William Street.

Accessibility

We welcome people of all physical abilities and we are working to provide universal access.

  • We have an elevator (450-pound capacity) big enough for an attended wheelchair. The elevator serves the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall. Other entrances to the building involve steps.
  • There is one handicap parking space on Main Street between Center and Church streets near the BRUU building.
  • The curb along Main Street is cut for wheelchair access.
  • From the Sanctuary, the Library and Classrooms 206/208 are marginally accessible with a slight ramp.
  • From the Fellowship Hall, there is a unisex accessible bathroom.
  • From the Fellowship Hall, the Lounge is accessible with a slight ramp.
  • Classrooms 304/306 are not accessible to a wheelchair.

Order of Service

You should be greeted at BRUU's door and provided a visitor's information packet. BRUU has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, so most people dress casually. We take words, music, and silence seriously and most services incorporate all three. A typical Sunday's order of service might look like this:

  • Announcements (at 9:55)
  • Call to Worship
  • Musical Prelude
  • Welcome (visitors are invited to stand and introduce themselves)
  • Opening Words and Chalice Lighting
  • Hymn
  • Joys and Sorrows
  • Spoken Meditation
  • Silent Meditation
  • Reading
  • Musical Anthem
  • Offertory
  • Sermon
  • Polylogue (opportunity for the congregation to ask questions or make comments)
  • Closing Hymn
  • Spoken Benediction
  • Sung Benediction

Some services do not follow this model, particularly lay-led services and the two annual choir services in December and June. Because of the wide variety of services, we encourage you to come to two or three services to get a true sense of BRUU. We invite you especially to come when Rev. Ladd is in the pulpit (you can check the Schedule of Services) and when the adult choir is singing (usually the second and third Sundays).

Children

Children and youth Religious Education (RE) (also known as Sunday School) occurs at the same time as the service. There is a nursery and a preschool room. For school-age kids there are rooms for grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7-8, and for high school. Children are also welcome to sit in the service with their parents, as long as they do not disturb the mood of the service.

The first Sunday of each month is "All Church Sunday." The RE classes join the congregation for the beginning of the service. They later return to their classrooms.

Fellowship

Coffee hour occurs immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall, one floor below the Sanctuary. Coffee, tea, other drinks, and snacks are provided. Please take one of the blue coffee mugs to show that you are interested in conversation. We're glad to see you, and would love to have a chance to get to know you!
