Ingathering and Water Communion

Date
Sunday, September 12, 2010, 10:00AM
Presenter
Reverend Nancy McDonald Ladd
Note
Water Communion Service. We’ll also celebrate the dedication of Jackson Cooper.
Description
The pace of our church life tends to move from Fall to Fall rather than shift upon the turning of the New Year. Here we stand at the beginning of another fall together. We’ll have our annual ingathering and water communion service. Don’t forget to bring water with you as a symbol of your interconnection to the BRUU community.

"Creating Change"

Date
Sunday, September 19, 2010, 10:00AM
Presenter
Reverend Nancy McDonald Ladd
Description
Coming off a summer of protests and political infighting over immigration, religious liberty and other issues, we’ll look at the long UU heritage of civil disobedience. Is this the best way to make change? What are our primary tools for change and what really works?

"The Pale Blue Dot"

Date
Sunday, September 26, 2010, 10:00AM
Presenter
Bruce Roemmelt
Description
An amateur astronomer has lots of choices to make about what he looks at/listens to in the universe, just as we all have the choices about what we do at BRUU. The sermon will include some reflections on a UU predecessor who discovered a comet and try to put in perspective where we are in the universe (and within the BRUU community). We will discuss our significance/insignificance living our brief lives on this rocky bit in our little outpost in the Milky Way. Bruce will share some pictures he’s taken of solar system objects, and some Hubble astro photography as well. There will be a homework assignment.

"The Inverse Power of Praise"

Date
Sunday, October 3, 2010, 10:00AM
Presenter
Reverend Nancy McDonald Ladd
Description
Recent studies in child development show that young children actually respond negatively to excessive non-specific praise like “aren’t you smart,” or “you’re so special.” How do we, as individuals and congregations, both crave this kind of praise and find ourselves spiritually bereft from searching for it. We’ll also have a ceremony of dedication for our religious education teachers.

In this presentation, they offer that perhaps the most important philosophical stance we take, knowingly or unknowingly, is the degree to which we trust reality.
