Racial Justice
There are lots of things we can do, lots of ways to get involved. You might be able to exert more control than you realize.
- Educate yourself: read Kendi’s book, How To Be An Antiracist. Watch movies like Selma, One Night in Miami, or Fruitvale Station. Subscribe to podcasts like Code Switch or Floodlines. Read the articles in our list of Anti-Racism Resources. Even investigating your genealogy may reveal how your ancestors were involved with the system of slavery, making you a beneficiary or a victim. Explore the UUA’s own curricula and trainings on anti-racism: https://www.uua.org/racial-justice.
- Help out with the research within the UUA: Form a study group to look into the 8th Principle (https://www.8thprincipleuu.org/) and recommend that our congregation adopt it. Work on the still-current Congregational Study Action Issue (CSAI) “Undoing Systemic White Supremacy: A Call to Prophetic Action. Work on any of the older CSAIs that are related to addressing racism and systems of white supremacy.
- Get involved in a local racial justice issue. VOICEs taking action on issues that involve discrimination against people of color, such as criminal justice, restoring voting rights, immigration, increasing diversity among educators. Closer to home, work with the BRUU Green Team on Environmental Justice issues and their impact on communities of color.
- Learn a useful skill. Get trained in Bystander Intervention (https://www.ihollaback.org/stoppoliceviolencetraining/). Sign up for diversity or anti-racism training at the workplace. Advocate for such training if your employer doesn’t offer it.
- Join an organization. NAACP, BLUU, BLM, VOICE
- Contribute financially. Contribute to the organizations mentioned previously. Patronize black-owned bookstores (https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2020/06/9851084/black-owned-bookstores-independent-online). Research and invest in companies focused on anti-racism, read Investopedia: https://www.investopedia.com/racial-justice-investing-5111992, Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/sites/bhaktimirchandani/2020/08/11/demystifying-racial-justice-investing/?sh=5df552be312a
